A Fresh Start

Hello Lazy Bums.

You’ve probably noticed that I’m in the process of redesigning the site. Trust me, it’s going to get bigger and better than ever before. I’ve got some really big ideas in store here, and trust me when I say that LazyBumFitness will – I repeat WILL – become the place where all the cool kids come to get in shape and look great.

You’ve also probably noticed that almost all of my old workouts, posts, articles and infamous rants are no longer here. I’ve decided to take everything offline and start over from scratch. It’s kind of like a breakup: We just needed a fresh start. And no, it’s not you, it’s me.

I’ll probably resurrect some of my classic workouts and rants as time goes by, and of course I’ll still be adding plenty of new ones. You know me, I have a hard time not getting carried away sometimes.

Here are just some of the ways I’ll be changing up Lazy Bum Fitness:

A Clean, New Look

Remember how old and outdated the site used to look? It was so… so… 2011. Boring. Lame. Stupid. Unattractive. Ridiculous. … okay, you’ve made you point…

Hopefully you like the new design. I think it’s hip. That is, assuming “hip” is still hip to say. If not, insert whatever modern slang term for “Awesome” that you’d like.

A Welcome Community

In the past I’ve pretty much just thrown all my stuff out there and said, “Here you go!”

Obviously I’ve got a lot of things to say, but so do you. And you should have every opportunity to get them off your chest. It’s only fair that it work both ways, right?

Your comments are always appreciated in each and every post (except you evil spam robot jackasses, I HATE you with every cubit of my soul). So feel free to tell me what you think. If you’ve got any questions about anything I’ve said, let me know, I’ll do my best to address them all. If you LOVE what I said and you want to show your undying support, do it! If you HATE what I said and want to tell me what a douche I am, then that’s your right, too – just be prepared for me to exercise my similar rights…

Share With Your Online Friends

I’m working on ways to introduce Lazy Bum Fitness to the world of social media. Soon you’ll be able to share this lovely site and all its glorious pages to your friends, family and cyber stalkers via Facebook, Twitter and more.

So sit back and relax, and prepare to be amazed. Lazy Bum Fitness is going to get bigger and better than ever before.

Push Ups

When many people think of Push Ups, they think of maniacal school gym teachers or screaming drill sergeants. They’re one of those exercises that many people spend the rest of their lives trying to forget. But the truth is that they are one of the best upper body exercises for building strength, endurance, tone, stability and even fat loss.

Yup, you read right. Push Ups rock.

**Disclaimer: Check with your doctor before doing anything. Seriously.**

How To Do A Push Up

Step 1.

Drop into the standard Push Up pose. With your hands a little wider than shoulder width and palms facing down, tighten your body so that it’s as rigid as a board, with only your palms and toes touching the ground (you can make Push Ups less intense by putting your knees on the ground if you’d like).

Step 2.

Keep your entire spine in alignment and your eyes focused on the ground just below you, then slowly lower yourself to the ground. There’s a good amount of debate going on right now about how far you should go down, but that’s for another time. For now, go down as far as you feel comfortable. If your chest touches the floor, that’s fine, just don’t take the tension out of your arms – you must support your entire body weight with your arms the entire time.

It’s a good idea to breathe in as you lower yourself to the ground. You never want to stop breathing during any exercise, actually, unless you like the idea of CPR being performed on you by ambulance paramedics or greasy room mates.

Step 3.

Slowly push yourself back up to the starting position. Again, be sure to keep your spine in a straight alignment and don’t let the small of your back drop or bend.

Breathing out as you push up is another good idea. So is grunting and hollering if you’re looking to attract attention. Belching is optional.

Common Questions About Push Ups

Q: Are push ups hard?

A: Try one and find out. They are difficult for some, not so much for others. But like anything, the more you work at them the easier they become.

Q: Will I get buff by doing push ups?

A: Everybody is different, but most people notice much more muscle tone and even additional muscle mass after adding push ups into their routine.

Q: What if I don’t want to get buff? I want to lose weight?

A: You will lose weight. Push ups use lots of muscles in the body, and therefore burn plenty of calories. And because it’s a strength training exercise, you’ll be burning additional calories long after you’re done. And as for the not wanting to get buff bit, push ups will tone your arms more than buff them up.

Q: If push ups are so great, why don’t athletes do them.

A: They do.

Q: But they’ve got thousands of dollars worth of exercise gear, they don’t need to do push ups.

A: Well that’s not really a question, more of a statement, but I digress. Actually world class athletes do plenty of push ups in addition to using their expensive workout gadgets. Herschel Walker, an All Pro running back in the NFL, is said to have never lifted weights until he got to college. Instead he did push ups and become one of the strongest running backs in high school football history.
